Classic Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

These scalloped potatoes are a comforting classic—creamy, tender, and flavorful. Heating the milk before baking gives them a rich, velvety texture, just like my mom used to make.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. Layer the Potatoes and Onion
Place about one-third of the potato slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer one-third of the sliced onions over the potatoes.
  3. Add Flour and Butter

Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of flour evenly over the potatoes and onions, and dot with 2 tablespoons of butter. Season lightly with salt and black pepper.

  4. Repeat Layers

Repeat these layers two more times, using up all the potatoes, onions, flour, and butter, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper as you go.

  5. Warm the Milk:

In a small saucepan, heat the milk until it’s warm (but not boiling).

  6. Add Milk

Pour the warm milk over the layered potatoes in the baking dish, adding enough to reach the top layer of potatoes.

  7. Bake

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

  8. Serve

Serve hot and enjoy your delicious, creamy scalloped potatoes!
